The History of Flutter in less than 3 minutes!

Ever wondered what the history of Flutter is, but don’t want to read through long articles? Well, then you are at the right place here! In this article, you will get to know the most important milestones of Flutter in less than 3 minutes! Let’s get started!

Happy reading!

The Beginning

In the beginning, Flutter wasn’t called Flutter. Instead, it was called “Sky Engine”. What a great name. As you know, Flutter is open source, and the first commit ever was on October 23, 2014, literally called “Open the Sky”. A half year later, on April 29, 2015, it was finally announced to the public at Dart Developer Summit 2015. Between the Dart Developer Summit 2015 and 2016 the name finally changed to “Flutter”. But why? According to Adam Barth, they had to pick a new name because of some lawyers.

The first Flutter Version — Alpha to 1.0

Now when did we get the first public release of Flutter? 2 years later after the first public announcement on May 2017. It was in the alpha version 0.06. But then, 2018 was a big year.

In February, they released the first Beta Version, and nearly one year later, on December 4, 2018, we got Flutter 1.0 🥳.

But what was included in this release?

Flutter was finally stable for iOS and Android so that people can build production apps.

Flutter Hummingbird / Web

Have you ever heard of Flutter Hummingbird? Okay, maybe the people that know Flutter for a little bit longer. But when they released Flutter 1.0, they also talked about Flutter Hummingbird at the end. It’s just a fancy name for the now-known Flutter Web.

Updates, Updates, Updates

Flutter was growing fast. Indeed, between February 2018 and December 2018 it was one of the top 100 GitHub Repositories. That’s why they’ve shipped many updated, especially for Performance, Stability, and much more. They have also added Flutter DevTools. Imagine a life without this great tool.

Flutter Engage

Flutter Engage was such a great event. You have to know, that I learned Flutter basics at the end of 2020, so Flutter Engage was the first event that I’ve watched about Flutter. And… they have released Flutter 2.0 🥂🎉🎊

Flutter Web got stable and we got Sound Null Safety. In the beginning, I never wanted to use Sound Null Safety and two months later I finally realized, that it’s such a great feature (You have to know, that Flutter was the first technology that I fully wanted to learn).

Updates, Updates, Updates again

There were many updates between Flutter 2.0 and 3.0. Two essential things are, that they have integrated Material You in Flutter 2.5 and with Flutter 2.10 they have finally added a stable release for Windows.

Google I/O — Flutter 3

On May 11, 2022, Flutter 3.0 came out, and with that many great features!

Flutter is now ready for production on all desktop platforms, including Linux and macOS. Foldable phone support was added and it got fully native on Apple silicon. It also included Material Design 3 and better integration of Firebase.
